Located at the quaint & old-timey Hougang Green Shopping Mall, Icebar cafe has a completely contrasting atmosphere with an industrial-style interior design, moody lighting and neon signs.

The quirky neon signs seem to be deliberately set up not just for ambient lighting but also as photo backdrops and a convenient selfie background.

One particular sign is very #inclusive, comprising of the four languages of Singapore - English, Mandarin, Tamil and Malay - making up the phrase "DANGER - I scream, you scream, we scream, for ice cream."

The cafe serves classic ice cream ($3.90 for 1 scoop, $7.60 for 2, $11.30 for 3) on waffles ($5) and beer ($8/bottle, $35 for 5) to wash it down. They offer a selection of unique ice cream flavours like Apple Strudel, Burnt Pineapple, Hong Kong Milk Tea and Honeycomb with Snickers.

But as we prefer traditional ice cream flavours, we went for waffles with three classics: Belgian Chocolate, Uji Matcha and Hokkaido Milk with strawberries.

The dairy-free Belgian Chocolate lived up to its premium label, with a comforting, rich chocolatey taste without being too jelak. We had high hopes for the Uji Matcha but found the matcha flavour a little too overpowering without enough sweetness to balance it out. Our favourite of the three was the Hokkaido Milk with strawberries. The creamy, milky ice cream had a pretty spot on Hokkaido milk taste, and the chunks of strawberries added a complementary sweet-sour kick.
After having one too many mediocre waffles at these sort of cafes, I had low expectations of the ones at Icebar, but they were surprisingly well done. The two little waffles had everything I was looking for: fragrant, subtly sweet, crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside.
Ice cream and beer seems like an unusual pairing but they go together pretty well! Their beer offerings include Heineken, Hoegaarden, Asahi, Corona Extra and 1664 Blanc. They also serve canned soft drinks ($3) like green tea.

The cafe is also giving away 5 tokens for every $10 spent, while stocks last, to have a go at the arcade claw machine games next door. We didn't manage to win anything but it was still good fun and most importantly, free!

Besides the Insta-worthy neon signs, Icebar is worth a repeat visit for their ice cream in a wide variety of unique flavours and comforting waffles, especially if you live around the area. It also opens late till 2am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays so you can get satisfy your late night ice cream cravings. Perhaps the only downside is that the location is sort of ulu as it's not within walking distance of any MRT stations.
