This Gorgeously Revamped Neoclassical Library Exists In Singapore In The Unlikeliest Of Places
Scrolling through the digital pages of an e-book is becoming the norm, but true bookworms will know that real joy is found when holding an actual, physical book in your hands. And of course, there’s no better place to leaf through a good paperback at a library, where there’s ultimate peace and quiet - along with a sizeable collection of even more stories to indulge in.
Recently, a newly-revamped library in Bukit Timah, Singapore, has gained attention for its Neoclassical design. No, it’s not one of the public National Library Board (NLB) libraries - it’s Hwa Chong Institution’s school library, and it’s absolutely gorgeous.

Hwa Chong Institution’s 2-storey Lee Kong Chian library sports Neoclassical interiors, with a modern touch. Its most iconic feature is its staircase, which splits into 2 pathways as it reaches the top.

Vines hang from the balcony, while chandelier lamps decorate the ceiling. Not that they’d need to be switched on much during the day, for the circular feature window and rooftop skylights already let a good amount of light in.

Despite the semi-rustic look of the library, it is by no means old-fashioned. Other than shelves stacked high with books, it also has virtual resources to aid in students’ learning.

There are also conducive study corners, as well as spaces for project work meetings and other student activities.

Some of the study desks even come with individual lamps, and power sockets for charging of devices! If only we had such wonderful facilities back in our school days.

You probably can’t just waltz in as a member of the public, but if you’re an alumnus of Hwa Chong Institution, you should be able to pop in and pay a visit - and perhaps meet some of your old teachers too!
