Freshly baked bread is probably the next best thing to Chris Evans/ Captain America. (Or Thor...or even The Hulk if you have a penchant for green men) These mouth watering goodies from Bangkok will make you want to ditch the diet and succumb to the perils of carbohydrates.

For the life of me, I could never understand how on earth anyone could go on a carbohydrate-free diet.
Anyone who tells you they hate carbohydrates is probably in serious denial.
I was one of those beings...until I decided "We are all going to die anyway, so whatever... I'm just gonna eat everything and anything I WANT." So this mantra stayed.
Nobody will ever need to know the irresponsible amount of bread I ate while I was in Bangkok. My only regret was the lack of stomach capacity to store all the carb-goodness in it.
To save all of you the extra calories, we have narrowed the list down to 5 of the BEST tasting toasted buns/bread in Bangkok that will absolutely make your air ticket price worth while.

- YAOWARAT TOASTED BUNS

It was love at first bite.
Despite the rather nondescript appearance of these buns, there was already long queue snaking through the streets. A queue??? For bread???
The sweet scent of freshly toasted bread pervaded the air, making my tummy rumble furiously.
After a 20 minute wait, I finally received a box of these goodies and eagerly took a huge mouth.
I was speechless.
It was sooooooooooo good.
I never knew that something so simple like bread could thrill me so much. Despite my trembling excitement, I, with much difficulty kept my calm and showed no evidence of emotions whatsoever because I (still) desired to be perceived as a sane member of society.
Popular flavours include the Condensed Milk and Sangkaya. Remember to eat while fresh and warm!
Address: Yaowarat Road (In front of Government Savings Bank)

2. Mont Nom Sod

Do not be fooled by the humble exterior of the shop and these seemingly unremarkable slices of bread. The taste more then makes up for it's appearance.
The crispy toasted bread slices are generously topped with a mouth watering range of luscious spreads like Coconut Custard, Condensed Milk, Chocolate, Taro spread and even a unique Pumpkin spread!
The toast is delightfully crispy on the surface, yet soft and fluffy on the inside, a far cry from many of the hard and dry varieties I have tried.
I had a grand total of...FOUR slices of toast at one sitting.
Which is a reasonable amount. :P

4. On Luk Yun
Another exceedingly popular breakfast spot with both tourists and locals alike. If you had to order just ONE dish, it had to be THIS.

The Egg Custard Bread (with a kaya dip). The Holy Grail of all Steamed Bread.
The dip is a combination of Kaya and Evaporated Milk, so delicious, I had to stop myself from licking the plate clean for fear of public judgement.
The sweet custard made a perfect accompaniment to the pillowy and soft bread. Within less then a minute, these little bites had magically disappeared into our faces.

Unassuming and diffident, On Luk Yun is nestled in a comfortable spot among the other buildings in the area. At first glance, one might not immediate notice this tiny little joint. It does not scream for attention but exudes it's own unique charm. The modest exterior, has an "old-school" vibe, which conceals the real magic that belies the interior.
With 60s style chairs and porcelain plates, this place is charming and nostalgic, reminiscent of old Chinese Bakeries and Vintage Shops.

5. Milk Plus (Bun Bun)

The best part about Milk Plus At Siam Square? NO QUEUE. Therefore, if the thought of queueing up at Yaowarat Toast Buns seems too much of an ordeal for you, this is the next best alternative.
I wandered into this shop with little expectation as my feet were crying out desperately and protesting, after all that arduous shopping. All I really wanted was a chair. (and some air conditioning)
My eyes immediately gravitated towards a huge poster advertising the "bun bun" bread. It looked incredibly delicious in the photos, so I was about to discover if pictures do indeed lie. These hot little mamas come in several flavours to please even the most discerning tongue. Nutella, condensed milk, mentaiko mayonaise, chocolate, custard to name a few.

I swear my heart just stopped for a moment when I stared at these soft pieces of bread absolutely dripping with fillings.
To say I was pleasantly surprised was an understatement.
These buns were the bomb. They surpassed all expectations.
I have no idea what sorcery was involved but the Thais have a seemingly winning formula for making bread. It was astounding the least to say, honestly better then anything I have tasted in Singapore.

The power of toast. Simple yet universal, therefore promising to appeal to all human beings with or without functioning taste buds. :P
Time to head down now to Bangkok to get your fix.
