French Lifestyle Hotel Mama Shelter Is The Coolest Spot For Your Next Staycay
When it comes to hotel staycays, location and personality are key. After all, nobody wants to spend extra time commuting to and from the city centre, and it's no fun staring at boring interiors during your weekend getaway. Well, Mama Shelter Singapore managed to check both boxes for us when we checked in for a short staycation!
Located near Somerset MRT Station, just off Orchard Road, Mama Shelter is the iconic French lifestyle hotel brand's first-ever Asia outpost. And it's got way more personality than your average boutique hotel, with a signature mix of vibrant interiors, playful design, good food and cheeky vibes all around.
Here's what we enjoyed most during our stay:
The room

First off, this is the ultimate staycay spot for a maximalist! We already knew that Mama Shelter wasn't going to be one of those cookie-cutter hotels, but our room still gave us a pleasant surprise.

The Mama room is the perfect size for just two people, as it isn't very large. However, it's very well equipped for a short stay, with free movies on the TV, earplugs, bathrobes, and even a Dyson hairdryer provided.

Instead of neutral colours and minimalist decor, our Mama room is filled with colourful details, eclectic furniture and playful design touches everywhere you look. There are Peranakan-inspired elements woven throughout the space, from patterned carpets to colourful tiles, mixed with funky artwork.
The dazzling rooftop

Our favourite part of the stay? Hands down, it's the Mama Sky Pool. The space looks more like a stylish beach club than a hotel pool, complete with a gorgeous mosaic-tiled swimming pool, striped umbrellas, tropical greenery and cosy lounge chairs.

We ended up spending way longer there than we planned, alternating between swimming, sipping cocktails by the super cute bar and soaking up the atmosphere.

If you're feeling peckish, you can also grab Mediterranean bar bites and signature drinks at the alfresco bar. There are also plenty of photo spots all around the rooftop, so this is certainly the place to wear your IG-worthy swimwear!
Mama Loves You restaurant

I don't know about you, but one of my fave parts of any staycay or vacay is the hotel breakfast. And the quality of the restaurant's food can really make or break a visit. Mama Shelter's interestingly named Mama Loves You restaurant serves up both breakfast and dinner, with varying experiences between the two.

Dinnertime was very entertaining and high-energy as a whole, thanks to the Dine & Dance experience—where live music carries on after dinner and special themed night offerings are available—but the standard of the food left much to be desired.

We tried the Mama's Happy Meal, a set ($79.90, serves two) that comes with two mains, unlimited skin-on fries, two glasses of prosecco and instead of a toy, you get a little tin of caviar. While the free-flow fries are satisfying and the prosecco very welcome, the portion size of the burgers is very small for the price tag.
To fill up our bellies, our party ordered additional St. Louis-Style Smoky Pork Ribs ($58, serves two) to share. While the meat was tender and juicy, the ribs unfortunately came with an extremely sweet and cloying sauce that destroyed the taste of the dish.
We'd also strongly advise those who plan to have dinner here to make reservations, as the restaurant is packed to the brim even on a weekday night.

The breakfast, however, is excellent and an absolute must-try in our books! We opted for a Mama's Big Breakfast and Avocado Toast, alongside coffee and hot chocolate. Everything tasted heavenly and had us wanting more.
All in all, we'd say that Mama Shelter is an ideal spot for a spirited, fun weekend with your date or your girl gang. Rooms are priced at approx. $240 a night, with special offers available for a limited time.
