Malaysian filmmaker Adele Lim, the writer of Crazy Rich Asians, is set to direct the next chapter of the beloved Princess Diaries series. This new film follows 2001’s The Princess Diaries and its 2004 sequel, Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

Sharing her excitement, Lim said, “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

Debra Martin Chase, the original producer of the series, will be producing the upcoming film, together with Anne Hathaway, who is producing through her company Somewhere Pictures. Naia Cucukov and Melissa Stack are also joining as executive producers.

The first Princess Diaries film, directed by Gary Marshall and based on Meg Cabot’s book, introduced Mia Thermopolis, an ordinary teen who suddenly learns she’s the heir to Genovia’s throne. Julie Andrews charmed us all as Mia’s grandmother, Queen Clarisse, tasked with transforming Mia into a proper princess. The cast also featured Mandy Moore, Heather Matarazzo, and Hector Elizondo.

Lim, no stranger to Disney, contributed to the 2021 animated hit Raya and the Last Dragon. She’s also made waves in television, writing for shows like One Tree Hill and Reign. However, her breakthrough moment came in 2018 with the pop culture sensation Crazy Rich Asians. She then made her directorial debut with Joy Ride in 2023, a comedy starring Ashley Park and Stephanie Hsu, produced by Seth Rogen’s Point Grey Pictures.

While it’s still unclear if Julie Andrews will return as Queen Clarisse Renaldi, we certainly hope she will. Fingers crossed!
