Move over, bubble tea - the coconut shake craze is taking over Singapore. Following the success of Mr Coconut and other similar drink kiosks trying to ride on the hype, our Little Red Dot’s first coconut-themed cafe, Coconuto, has opened its doors. With not only a slew of coconut-infused beverages, but also gelato and waffles, this hidden neighbourhood joint has wallet-friendly prices as well as edgy blue neon decor.

Good news for North-siders - Coconuto is located in the heartlands of Yishun, at the foot of a HDB block alongside other void deck stores.

While the space is pretty modest in size, the owners have clearly taken great care to do it up in a way that we’d describe as edgy, yet calming and unpretentious - a vibe achieved with unfussy furniture in a solid deep blue, muted grey walls painted with intentionally uneven brushstrokes, and just a bit neon light wall art.

This simple colour scheme is a refreshing change from the multitude of pink cafes or girly floral-themed eateries, while still retaining that “Instagrammable” quality.

Coconuto currently has 10 coconut drinks on their menu, with their original Coconut Shake at $4.20, and Coconut Juice with chunks of coconut meat at $3.40. The rest of the beverages are all coconut shakes in unique flavours, such as Oreo ($4.60), Gula Melaka ($$4.80), Black Sesame ($4.80), Coffee ($5.60), and Avocado ($5.80). We doubt we’ve ever seen such a diverse range of coconut shakes in one place before!

Give your drink some extra oomph with 8 topping options. Aside from the Coconut Ice Cream which costs $1, everything else from the Black Sticky Rice to Aiyu Jelly and Brown/White Konjac Pearls costs $0.80 per serving.

Gelato costs $3.80 for a single scoop, $7.20 for double, and an additional $0.80 for premium flavours. Opt to have it in a cup (no extra charge), cone ($0.80), or with a waffle ($4.50). We hear their charcoal waffle ($5.50) is highly popular, and there’s a red velvet ($5.50) version too.

Flavours include: Coco Taro, Gula Melaka Coconut, Mango Sticky Rice, Sea Salt Coconut, and Nuto's Favourite, which is creamy coconut ice cream topped with roasted coconut flakes.

Despite being relatively new, having opened in March 2022, Coconuto has received quite a lot of positive reviews, with happy customers praising them for the creamy consistency and flavour range of their gelato. If you’re not one with a sweet tooth, you might want to opt for 0% sugar for your drinks, as past visitors have mentioned them to be on the sweeter side.

Thankfully, the cafe has their own toilet, so you won’t have to hold your bladder or force yourself to use the not-so-clean one at the coffee shop nearby.

Coconuto does offer takeaways, and is also on food delivery platforms like foodpanda and Deliveroo. But as with all desserts, their offerings are best consumed on the spot, so we’d suggest heading down in person to give this humble new venture a shot. After all, their earliest closing time is 12am, with operation hours till 2am on Fridays and Saturdays, so there's plenty of leeway to make it in time even if you live in other estates.

As for Yishun folks, you've now got a convenient new supper go-to that's perfect for night owl hang-outs.
