On days where it's too unbearably hot, no one wants to deal with that icky feeling of damp hair clinging to the neck and shoulders. Then again, a regular ol' ponytail can be boring.
To feel more comfortable in the heat, try these five quick and easy hairstyles popular in Japan that are elevated versions of basic hairdos.

#1 Updos with Combs as Hair Accessories

A quirky hair trend in Japan is using a comb as a hair accessory. That might sound strange but surprisingly, it works! The key is choosing a small, lightweight comb so it stays in place, as well as a neutral colour so it doesn't look like a makeshift accessory.
Stick a mini comb on a simple ponytail to create a minimalist yet unique look that's a step up from a regular hairstyle.

This trend works best on a low ponytail or bun. You can even add multiple small combs for extra pops of colour.

#2 Ponytail Wrapped with Ribbon

Another unconventional hair trend in Japan is wrapping a ribbon around the entire length of a ponytail. It's one of those things that are simple and effective. The neat wrapping and contrasting colour of the ribbon gives the hair a sweet, feminine look.

Besides ribbon, you can also experiment with different materials and textures for a different aesthetic.

Try it on a ponytail or a half French braid updo like below.

#3 Hair-Wrapped Ponytail

Similar to the ribbon-wrapped hair trend, this look uses hair to wrap the ponytail instead.
You may be familiar with the popular sleek hairdo with hair covering the elastic band, but this trend goes beyond that and continues wrapping the ponytail down a few inches or even all the way to the end, depending on your preference.

To get this look, section your hair into three parts with two smaller ones at the sides and a bigger one in the middle. Tie the middle section into a ponytail, then wrap the left and right sections around the ponytail in opposite directions and secure with a hair tie.
#4 Messy Knotted Low Pony

On days you're in the mood for a hairdo that makes a subtle statement, try this messy asymmetrical ponytail that looks like a wonderful mix of crazy knots.

While this hairstyle looks complicated, it's actually pretty easy and fast to create.
Tie your hair into a regular ponytail and take a small section of hair to wrap the ponytail, then secure it with a hair tie. Repeat with another section of hair until you get to the desired length of hair wrapping. For a really whacky look, use a mix of thicker and thinner sections.
#5 Faux French Braid with a Bow

This feminine and sophisticated hairstyle screams a Japanese aesthetic. The loose "braids" and light volume makes it an effortlessly stylish and flattering hairdo, while the ribbon adds a sweet, girly touch.

The best thing about this this braided look is that it doesn't actually require braiding at all!
Section your hair into three parts with the middle section as the largest. Make the middle section into a flipped ponytail and loosen the hair to create volume. Create a French twist (twist two sections of hair while adding more hair gradually) on the two side sections, then wrap them around the main ponytail. Add a bow ribbon and voila, you have a gorgeous intricate hairdo that took just a few minutes to create.
