Even if you're not a regular reader, contemporary novels are generally able to find a way to everyone's heart with their comparatively easy writing styles and relatable characters. And while that does give this particular genre major flack for having too many disposable stories, there are some gems which will truly make your heart melt or make you just plain happy. We shortlisted these five books that feature some great writing and interesting characters, which will eventually make you fall in love with them!

'The Sun Is Also A Star' by Nicola Yoon

Straight-forward Natasha is getting deported back to Jamaica along with her family, but on her last day she meets the poetry-loving Daniel who strongly believes that it is fate that has brought them together. With their chance-meeting and difference in nature, you'll find yourself rooting for them as you see them gradually fall in love, and hoping for things to turn out differently.
One particularly great thing about the writing-style is the fantastic use of different POVs (point-of-view). If you've ever wondered about the life of those strangers that you only meet for 10 minutes or cross on the street, then you'll definitely love it!

'The Royal We' by Heather Cocks & Jessica Morgan

If you're obsessed with William and Kate, you cannot miss out on this rom-com, only here Rebecca is an American who after earning a scholarship in Oxford, finds herself sharing a hall with the future King of England. As she falls in love with him, she comes to realise the pressures of living in the spotlight and price one has to pay for true love. Don't worry, it's not as heavy as it sounds, it's actually quite fun!

Inspired from the Tudor era, if you love anything to do with the royal family and enjoy fantasy, then this might be your cup of tea. The most fun thing is that even though it's based in 1500s, the writing is very 2016 with modern slang used all over the place which added more humour to the already witty characters.

'Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine' by Gail Honeyman

Socially-awkward Eleanor has always been fine, leading a relatively comfortable life and she doesn't think that there's anything more to thrive for. But after meeting Raymond, the bumbling IT guy, she finds her way back to life where it's more about living than just existing. You may find yourself at times getting irritated by Eleanor and at times sympathising with her, or maybe just find yourself relating with her. Whatever maybe the case one thing's for sure, you'll relish every bit of it.

'My Oxford Year' by Julia Whelan

Elle Duran had this lifelong dream of studying in Oxford and once there, she inadvertently finds herself in a fling with her teacher which eventually turns into something bigger. This novel will definitely put you through a roller-coaster with a second half that might even make you cry.
