There’s been a growing interest in vegan beauty in recent years. As beauty junkies, we are becoming increasingly savvy - and that means we’re making more conscious choices when it comes to our lifestyle and the beauty products we buy. If you’re shopping around for lipsticks, why not consider these vegan lipstick options that are formulated without any animal-derived ingredients?

Common animal products used in lipsticks include beeswax, which helps to solidify the product and comes with moisturising properties, and carmine, a red pigment derived from crushed beetle shells. But do take note: just because a product is vegan doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s also cruelty-free. You can do a cross-check on Leaping Bunny or PETA to see if any animal testing is involved.

Read on for a list of vegan lipsticks that are also long-lasting and pigmented!

#1 Sahur’s Art The Kiss Collection

Founded by beauty influencer and award-winning celebrity makeup artist Sahur Saleim, Sahur’s Art products are all alcohol-free, cruelty-free and of course, vegan. The brand carries two types of lipstick formulas - Comfort Matte and Glazed Crème - which offer long-lasting, buildable and full coverage.

Our favourite? The Comfort Matte lipstick in the shade Adele. It’s a vibrant, statement-making hue of red, and the matte formula sits comfortably on your lips without drying them out. According to Sahur, this was the only matte lipstick she could comfortably wear while on Accutane, an acne medication that can cause dry and chapped lips.

If you’re part of the zero-waste movement, consider Lush’s Naked Refill Lipsticks. You’ll have to purchase the Refillable Lipstick Case first, but consider it a one-time expense to reduce single-use packaging. It’s made from recycled aluminium and brass, so it’s completely plastic-free.

The lipstick itself is packed with nourishing ingredients like organic castor oil and jojoba oil, ensuring a smooth application and keeps your lips moisturised. And it’s inclusive too - all 5 shades in this collection are suitable for all skin tones.

Price: Naked Refill Lipsticks: $30 | Refillable Lipstick Case: $20
Get it from Lush Wisma Atria, Raffles City or Vivocity and online.

#3 Rare Beauty With Gratitude Dewy Lip Balm

With many of us staying home and wearing masks for the past one and a half years, it’s only normal that we’ve started gravitating towards more natural (pun intended!) makeup looks. Think tinted sunscreens in place of full-coverage foundations, blendable cream blushers instead of heavy contouring, and fluffy soap brows.

Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty line has some great picks for the subtle but glowy makeup look, including its With Gratitude Dewy Lip Balm. These vegan and cruelty-free lip balms come with a light to medium tint that lasts all day while providing nourishment for your lips with a blend of botanicals like lotus, gardenia and white waterlily.

Mention vegan beauty and KVD Beauty is probably one of the first few brands to come to mind. Since its launch in 2008, the brand was committed to producing cruelty-free cosmetics from the get-go. In 2010, it launched its first vegan product, the Tattoo Liner, and the brand has been 100% vegan since 2016.

KVD Beauty’s most recent lipstick collection is the Epic Kiss Nourishing Vegan Butter Lipstick, available in 15 bold shades. Just one swipe is enough to give you an intense colour payoff with a high-shine finish. And just like its name suggests, the lipstick contains vegan cupuaçu butter that makes application well, smooth like butter. ?
