Heaven Spot: Singapore's 1st Graffiti Art Studio Where You Can Legally “Vandalise” Walls With Spray Paint

Graffiti art is legal in certain parts of the world, and many of these beautifully spray painted walls have become tourist attractions in themselves. But attempt to recreate on Singapore’s HDB void deck walls what you’ve witnessed in Melbourne or Paris, and you’ll swiftly land yourself a hefty fine and perhaps a week of fame in our local news. Unless you’re a professional street artist with a permit, that is. Which is like, probably less than 1% of us.

Enter Heaven Spot, the first graffiti art studio in Singapore where you can go wild “vandalising” walls with reckless abandon - all without getting caught by the police, we promise. We had the chance to pop by for a visit ourselves, and here’s a review of our experience!

Heaven Spot is the brainchild of a bunch of friends who wanted to give people in Singapore a safe, judgement-free zone to try out graffiti art. While there is one other local company that gives you a section of wall to legally “vandalise”, it’s located in an outdoor setting and mainly utilised by pros, which can be very intimidating for newbies with zero art background.

If you’re curious about the moniker, “Heaven Spot” is actually a graffiti term that refers to highly perilous, hard-to-reach places such as rooftops and highway signs. ‘Cause if you fall, guess where you’re going? Yup, straight to heaven.

Don’t worry, there won’t be any of such dangers at Heaven Spot, although it is a paradise of sorts for anyone who’s itching to let their creativity run free. We’re not sure if the double entendre was intended, but that’s how we’d like to think of it.

The studio is located in a nondescript and slightly run-down industrial building, but don’t let that put you off. Once its doors opened, we were met with a flurry of colour - not just in the form of the graffiti walls, but also the tinted lights illuminating the space. Perhaps the one common trait between the exterior and interior of the space is a grungy, underground vibe - this was further amplified by groovy beats playing on their sound system.

Other than spray cans, you’ll be loaned a pair of safety goggles and a badass-looking gas mask to keep the paint fumes out. Unlike art jamming which can involve drips and spills, things don’t usually get messy here unless you intentionally go around spraying your friends (please, don’t). As such, feel free to wear anything you like - even a pretty dress - as long as it’s something that you can move around comfortably in.

We would recommend removing your footwear especially if it's expensive; I accidentally stepped on my boyfriend’s foot during the session, and a bit of paint that had somehow gotten on the sole of my sneaker created a grey splodge on his white one. Big oops. :(

For extra protection, you can always use the coveralls provided at no extra cost. Do note that Heaven Spot will not be responsible for any damage caused to your apparel, so it’s better to err on the side of caution!

Before starting, the staff briefly went through a few spray painting techniques with us, and demonstrated how to achieve lines of different thicknesses. Then, we were left to our own devices to create our masterpiece. There are no rules, so just go crazy!

You’ll be given a surface of 30 square feet per pax to paint on, and 2 cans of paint per person in colours of your choice. The larger your group, the more space and paint colours you’ll get! As we went as a couple, we were given two sections, which was just the right size for a joint piece. A ladder was also provided so that we could make full use of the space at the top.

The beauty of graffiti art is that it doesn’t have to be perfect to look good, so you literally don’t need any artistic skills whatsoever. Uneven lines and drips all contribute to the overall charm of your finished product! Also, don’t be disheartened if your artwork doesn’t look that great up close, as the colours and images really pop when viewed from afar and on camera.

Tip: To avoid colours from bleeding, wait for your first coat of paint to dry before adding an outline or different shade. I was impatient, and my purple cat ended up “crying”.

It was our first time dabbling in graffiti and it was a blast, with the 1-hour duration being just nice. We’d fully recommend it if you’re in search of a unique and laid-back date idea! The staff didn’t micromanage us, but were always within reach to provide tips or give a word of encouragement here and there. We loved their chill demeanour and how they treated us like friends.

Despite only having a fixed number of paints between the two of us, they were kind enough to hand us a half-used can that was lying around so that we’d have more colours to jazz up our piece with (subject to availability, not 100% guaranteed). They also went the extra mile to place a mat on the base of our painted wall before we sat there for a photograph, so as to avoid possible clothing stains. 10/10 for the warm service!

Their usual capacity is 12, but with Covid-19 restrictions in place, Heaven Spot is now open for booking to groups of up to 5 people at time of writing. Patrons are permitted to bring their own food and drinks if they wish. Prices are as follows:
