14 New Cafes In June 2021 - Cappadocia-Themed Restaurant, Santorini Vibes, & Izakaya w/ Sakura Decor

Come 13th June, certain restrictions will be lifted, though the dining ban still remains. That’s alright though, because we’re finally seeing some light at the end of the tunnel. If all goes well, we’ll get to dine-in at our favourite eateries after 21st June, so let’s all behave during this one crucial, deciding week! As a teaser, here’s our list of new cafes and restaurants in June 2021, to hit up once we’re able to. In the meantime, all of them are open for deliveries and/or takeaways for those who simply can’t wait!

#1: Clap Cafe - industrial-themed space with cakes & tarts

As fate would have it, Clap Cafe was supposed to have their grand opening just one day before the Heightened Alert dining ban kicked in. They’ve since remained in their soft launch stage, but their doors remain open for customers who wish to have their coffee and pastries to go. A favourite here seems to be the Maple Pecan Tart ($8), with the creamy smooth Basque Cheesecake ($9) looking pretty promising as well!

An Affogato here costs $8, with double shot and lactose-free options, and loose-leaf teas (from $6) are refillable for up to 4 brews. Try their signature Pumpkin Latte ($8) or refreshing fruity fizzies like Ceylon Peach ($9) and Orange Ginger ($9).

We look forward to basking in the ambience of their soothing industrial-themed space with muted grey cement walls and floors when the time comes. Spot the floral feature wall too - this will be switched up from time to time, as a means of creative expression for the staff!

#2: Wooftopia - dog cafe with meals for both pets and humans

While there are an increasing number of pet-friendly cafes in Singapore, not all of them cater to your furkid in terms of food - which means they either have to wistfully watch you eat, or that you’ll have to lug a bowl and kibble around. But Wooftopia, a new dog cafe in Singapore, has meals for both you and your furbaby, so no one has to be left out!

Food aside, Wooftopia has got their decor perfected with pink plush seats, doggy-themed art, and rainbow pom poms with neon lights against a feature wall. All the better for cute paw-traits with your best friend!

#3: Ambling Turtle - ondeh ondeh cake, chendol waffles & Peranakan croissants

Inspired by the Peranakan culture of the Katong area that it’s set in, Ambling Turtle dishes out Nyonya flavours in the form of Ondeh Ondeh Cake ($7.50), Pulut Hitam Tarts ($6.50), and a duo of waffles called Go Big and Go Home ($12.50) each. The latter is a chendol waffle topped with red beans, green jelly, and gula melaka - the whole works.

Here are also croissants like you’ve never had them before - have them served with Nyonya Chicken Curry ($10), Satay Chicken ($10), and Pulled Beef Rendang ($12)!

If you’re wondering about the cafe’s name, it’s actually a tribute to its neighbourhood; Katong is the Malay name of a now-extinct species of leatherback sea turtle that used to be found in Singapore’s waters.

#4: Cappadocia - Turkish restaurant with mesmerising themed ambience

Transport yourself abroad with Cappadocia, a Turkish restaurant in the heart of the Bugis area that not only serves up dishes traditional to the country, but emulates it as well with its themed decor. Think wall art with intricate patterns, a grand gilded ceiling, and resplendent glass lamps that reflect rainbow hues all over! Completing the look is wallpaper showing scenes of Cappadocia’s famous hot air balloons, making you feel as though you’re actually there.

We recommend starting out with a shared Mezza Platter ($31.50), which gives you the best of 5 dips including hummus and baba ganoush, served with salad and Turkish bread. Mains include the Shish Kebab ($27.90) and Chicken Shish Tawouk ($25.90).

Finish off with a sweet dessert like Baklava ($14.50), Kunefe ($14.90), and Krem Karamel ($13.90) and wash it down with some refreshing Turkish Apple Tea!

#5: Asylum Coffeehouse - sugee cake & buah keluak-inspired coffee

Warning: A single sip of Asylum Coffeehouse’s homebrewed goodness might drive you to insanity - in a good way. Their fresh blends are made using only the finest coffee beans, and to keep you on your toes, they have weekly limited specialty beans available for fragrant pour-overs.

Designed to encourage interaction between patrons and staff, the bar counter is a round one - but fear not if you’re an introvert cas there are cushioned window seats great for people-watching at.

Perhaps the only thing “crazy” here is Keluak, a coffee blend inspired by the Peranakan Buah Keluak with chocolatey, nutty, and earth flavours. Conventionalists can go for options like Iced Black ($6.50) and Hot Chocolate ($6.50).

Pair those with The Block - OG ($6), their signature buttery sugee cake made with almond, Italian meringue, and rum. For a heartier bite, try one of their sandwiches, such as the Turfoieken ($19) - a turkey, foie gras, and chicken sourdough sandwich with aioli and apple chutney.

#6: Nalati - first garden-themed restaurant in the CBD

CBD workers now have a sweet escape in the form of Nalati, the first garden-themed restaurant in the area. With its high ceiling full of dangling ferns and plenty of other leafy shrubs dotted across its premises, it offers a mind-calming respite in the midst of the busy concrete jungle.

Even the bathrooms come with the tropical theme - relieving yourself takes on a whole new meaning now.

Those who work in the area can grab an affordable Western or Asian 2- or 3-course set lunch from $9.90 to $14.90. Else, you can go for a la carte items like the Cold Cut Platter ($23.80) with cheese and parma ham, Grilled Seafood Platter For 4 ($48.80) with mussels, whole squid, and prawns, and Linguine Aglio Olio ($10.80).

#7: Cafe Monochrome - Singapore’s first 2D “cartoon” cafe

We’ve seen countless photos of the 2D “cartoon” cafe in Korea, and now, Singapore finally has her very own version of the quirky eatery. Aptly named Cafe Monochrome, this fully black-and-white cafe looks just like a comic world or colouring book come to life!

The only thing coloured here will be you and your food - all the better for photos that really pop! They’re currently offering takeaways for their mains, with a 1-for-1 offer till 13 June.

#8: Freakin’ Yummy Izakaya (FYIzakaya) - Japanese yakitori restaurant with cherry blossom decor

Sandwiched in between an Irish pub and 7-Eleven is Freakin’ Yummy Izakaya (FYIzakaya), a little Japanese yakitori joint. You may not notice it at first, but once you do - it’s almost like you’re teleported overseas. A bar counter takes up most of the narrow space, with the rest of the high stools set in twos against a wall of illustrations depicting the streets of Japan. Pink cherry blossoms and glowing lanterns hang from above, making for an intimate atmosphere.

Kushiyaki skewers start from $2.80, with options like grilled chicken heart, char-grilled chicken liver, and char-grilled cherry tomatoes as the cheapest options. This goes all the way up to $18.80 for their Supreme Ika - Japanese flying squid. These should be paired with their many alcoholic beverages, of course! Beer is from $8 and sake is from $12, but if you need to wash off the booze, there’s green tea for just $2.

Pop by during lunch and be treated to one of their reasonably priced donburi set meal options from around $15 to $20, served with house salad, pickles, onsen egg and miso soup. Examples include Ebi Fry Curry Don ($15.80) and Yakiniku Foie Gras Truffle Don ($20.80), a hot favourite among the restaurant’s regulars.

#9: Little Rogue Coffee - spacious & homely, with free books

The “Coffee & Sunshine” neon signage displayed on Little Rogue Coffee’s wall is telling of the good vibes you’ll get here. Exceedingly spacious and homely, this eatery sports a touch of Bali-esque decor and even allows cyclists to park their bicycles within the space. On top of that, they’re in the midst of setting up a mini community library, where patrons can drop off their unwanted pre-loved books and pick up another for free!

But coffee only scratches the surface of their menu. With dishes like Miso Roasted Cauliflower Salad ($18), Bacon Wrapped Prawns Risotto ($25), and Soft Scrambled Eggs & Ikura ($14), their all-day brunch fare isn’t your run-off-the-mill sort and we bet you’ll have a hard time choosing just one! Small bakes like Brownies ($6.50), Teacakes ($7.50), and House Marinated Wings ($12) are sure to tempt you as well.

#10: Éla - Greek joint with cosy, airy setting

With wooden seats, light wood, and white walls accented with a tinge of blue, Greek eatery Éla brings to mind a chill vacation on Santorini. The airy atmosphere of the place will instantly put you at ease - all the better to get you into the mood for some hearty feasting!

Dips are all reasonably priced at $8.90 and suitable for sharing. Can’t decide between Cod Roe, Cucumber Yoghurt, Roasted Eggplant, and Spicy Feta? Have them all with the Dip Party Platter ($18.9), served with pita.

Meaty mains here include Herb Sirloin Skewers ($20.90), Yoghurt Mint Lamb ($18.90), and Herb Rub Beef ($17.90). Go easy and split portions with friends if possible, ‘cause you’ll want to save space for desserts like Baklava ($10.90) and Rice Pudding ($6.90).

#11: Kotuwa - contemporary Sri Lankan restaurant

If you haven’t already been acquainted with Sri Lankan dishes, Kotuwa is a great place to start. No, it’s not the same as Indian cuisine; While certain ingredients and elements of their dishes like dhal, curries, and spices may be similar in nature, Sri Lankan nosh has its own uniqueness. The owner himself is of Sri Lankan heritage, so you’ll only be getting top flavour here - with a slight modern twist.

We’re sure you’re no stranger to Sri Lankan crab, and if that’s what’s on your mind, go straight for the Crab Curry cook with cumin, fenugreek, chilli and coconut. Curry of Sea Bass ($26) is another seafood dish to try, else you can go for their highly-raved Black Pepper Kithul Pork ($26) - crispy pork belly with black pepper kithul caramel and guindilla pepper.

There’s dessert, too - try the Watalappam Tart ($16) which packs intense flavour with coconut custard with jaggery, pistachio, candied orange and spices. Alcoholic beverages like beer, wine, and spirits are available from $12.

The ambience of the place also reflects the food - while classy and contemporary with wicker chairs and a huge chandelier hanging from the ceiling, there are also traditional cultural elements like elephant statues and flower garlands. It’s a great place for a dinner date if you’re looking to deviate from your usual haunts.

#12: Maisons Bowl - pink cafe with healthy bowls and toasts under $10

Naysayers would say that healthy food is expensive and unsatisfying, but they’re sure to change their mind after encountering Maisons Bowl. This health food cafe at Upper Thomson has options under $10 - and we’re not talking about side dishes.Their all-day brunch menu includes affordable Avocado Egg on Toast ($9.90), Crusty Peanut Butter & Jelly Toast ($7.90), and customisable Grain Bowls ($9.90) all served in hearty portions.

Even their slightly pricier items don’t hit $14, with the Chonky Smoked Salmon Toast and Yoghurt Granola Parfait both at $11.90 each.

Bonus: The cafe is washed in a dusty pink shade, with preserved flowers and cute avocado plushies adding some colour. Plus, they serve Lattes ($5.50) with adorable animal-themed foam art!

#13: Lola Faye - gelato cafe with tropical vibes

We’ll never say no to gelato - especially when in a beautiful tropical space like Lola Faye’s. Be prepared to throw your diet straight out of the window, for their sinful gelato with croissant or waffle combinations are just too good to resist. Flavours include Strawberry Dreams, Rich Hazelnut Rocher, and Dark Fantasy, with a single scoop priced at $5 ($9 for double scoops). This may be on the pricey side, but ingredients used are said to be premium.

#14: Suzuki Coffee - zen coffee roaster with serious Kyoto vibes

Hard to believe just by looking at the photos, but Suzuki Coffee isn’t a teahouse in Japan. This hidden spot of tranquility is located at an ulu industrial area of Jurong and packs serious Kyoto vibes - not just with its zen decor, but also with its drink offerings that are made using uji matcha from Kyoto itself, along with Hokkaido milk. Every order comes with a little treat, such as a Lotus Biscoff cookie!

With wooden furnishing, bonsai trees, noren curtains and even a real, working shishi-odoshi fountain, this coffee joint that roasts all its own beans in-house is certainly worth the trip even if you live on the opposite side of the island.
