Wang Lee Hom Now Sports A Beard & Braided Pigtails, Fans Have Mixed Reactions

Even if you’re not a regular listener of Mandopop, you can’t not know who Wang Lee Hom is. And the image you have of him in your mind is probably this: Clean-shaven, baby smooth skin, and an overall youthful appearance that is in no way telling of his age of 45 years.

Nope, not anymore. The Taiwanese singer-songwriter has given himself a surprising new look by letting his hair grow out, along with his facial hair - and fans have mixed reactions.

Judging from his Instagram posts, Wang Lee Hom has been sporting this rugged appearance for a few months now. His first photo with this look was posted on April 9 2021, with him playing the piano in a dim candle-lit room. The dark composition of the photo results in the look being difficult to make out, but you can still see the telltale strands of his facial fuzz as part of his silhouette. His hair is also noticeably longer here.

Shortly after that, he posted a picture of himself with Taiwanese actor Wallace Huo, lyricist Vincent Fang, and another friend checking out old Chinese literature. But fans and industry friends were not so much interested in the books as they were in Lee Hom’s makeover. 

While some fans praised him for looking “handsome” with the beard, one jokingly asked if he had gone on a retreat in the mountains, while another said he looked like Santa Claus. Fellow Taiwanese celebrity Vivian Hsu even cheekily commented, “Is this Keanu Reeves?”

Just in case you can’t recognise him - Lee Hom is the one in the black cap and white tee.

The hair chronicles don’t end there. A day before his 45th birthday, Lee Hom posted a mirror selfie of him getting his hair done in tiny rasta-style braids, with the caption, “To be honest, I don’t even remember the last time I shaved…or got a haircut. #birthdaybraids”.

LOL, birthday braids? Perhaps that’ll become a new hair trend for 2021.

Again came a bunch of “Keanu Reeves” references, along with a new set of “Bob Marley” ones, but fans were generally not big on this look - and they didn’t hold back in expressing that thought. Some funny comments we saw were “At least your eyebrows [are] still in shape ?” and “Happy Birthday!!! But ummm no ?”. None of them were mean or disrespectful though - t’was all in good fun!

Just yesterday, Lee Hom proudly debuted another new hairstyle featuring his braids - this time twisted into two pigtails. Based on his caption and the lone dumbbell in the background of the photo, it appears that he was exercising like this. Gotta keep those locks out of your eyes when working out, amirite?

It seems that fans have had enough at this point - a handful of them have started urging him to shave! Wilber Pan, however, commented to say that he wanted to leave his hair long like Lee Hom’s too.
