If you were one of those students who had to drag yourself out of bed to go to school, perhaps things might have been different if you had attended Nanyang Primary School in Singapore. A section of this school is filled with cheerful rainbow colours.

The colourful building was built in 2015 as an extension to the existing primary school. Designed by Australian architecture firm studio505 in collaboration with local company LT&T architects, the design consists of a large internalised valley that serves as a communal space.

This rainbow valley is open to the elements but hidden from the surrounding public area to create a private space while encouraging active, uninhibited free thinking. Greenery is incorporated throughout the space which adds a comforting touch of nature to the bold, modern architecture.

The rainbow facade was created using emulsion paint on profiled precast concrete spandrels with coloured aluminium shading shelves.

In contrast to the colourful exterior, the interior has a traditional design with a grey and white colour scheme, probably to avoid a colourful sensory overload while studying. The only pop of colour are the classroom doors. All the classrooms also face away from the central valley and towards the quieter residential areas.
