These tips will also help make your lipstick go on smoother and look more even.

#1 Apply a thick layer of lip balm

Apply a thick layer of lip balm during your skincare routine and before you start on applying makeup. This step softens any dead skin on your lips and moisturises them at the same time.

#2 Use tissue to rub off the lip balm

Next, use a tissue to gently rub off any excess lip balm or softened dead skin on your lips before applying any lipstick. This step acts as a fuss-free exfoliation routine you can do every day instead of the usual sugar lip scrub which can be messy.

#3 Apply a bit of foundation on your lips

Put your lips together then use your finger or a brush to dab some foundation onto the outer corners of your lips. This step helps to cover your natural lip colour so that your lipstick shade will appear on your lips true to the one on the packaging.

This also removes any leftover lip balm on your lips that will affect the colour of your lipstick too.

#4 Apply a bit of lipstick on the inner corners of your lips

To get that gradient lip look, only apply lipstick on the inner corners of your upper and lower lips. Use a dabbing motion when applying to prevent going overboard.

Then, use your finger or a lip brush to blend the colour out towards the rest of your lips. This technique ensures that the more of the colour is concentrated on the inner corners, which is an integral part when it comes to gradient lip looks.

If you find the colour too light, dab a bit more lipstick on the inner corners and blend it out again until you achieve your desired shade.

#5 Use a cotton swab to blur the outline of your lips

Lastly, use a cotton swab to rub against the outline of your lips to achieve a blurry effect. Although most people don't do this, a less defined lip outline is one of the ways to nail that gradient lip look.
