Crazy cat lady who loves afternoon tea, kawaii Japanese fashion, and all things Sanrio.

After trying countless shampoos and DIY scalp treatments, I still haven’t rid myself of one of my biggest beauty banes: A terribly oily scalp. Even if I leave the house with freshly washed hair, it gets greasy in just a couple of hours and I’m left with a limp, stringy-looking mop by the end of the day - which doesn’t bode well for post-work outings and dates in the evening.

In recent years, I’ve also experienced a fair bit of hair fall - even though I’m only in my mid-20s.

In a bid to tackle the root of the problem, I tried out an award-winning customised scalp treatment by Topp Care Hair Solutions, a hair and scalp care specialist centre in Singapore, and here’s how it improved my oily scalp issues in just one session.

Note: Topp Care Hair Solutions has implemented precautionary measures and regular disinfecting to ensure staff and customers are safe. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to hair issues since everyone is made differently, and Topp Care recognises that. That’s why their hair and scalp treatments are customised according to your individual needs after a proper consultation.

Upon reaching Topp Care’s cosy outlet, I was brought into a private consultation room where their US Trichology Institute (USTI) certified hair specialist did a close-up analysis on my hair and scalp.

What we found wasn’t exactly pretty - plenty of my hair follicles were clogged with excessive sebum build-up, causing oily scalp and hindering hair growth. Because of that, my hair has been thinning slightly, especially at the crown where the bulk of the oiliness usually occurs.

With an easy-to-understand chart, my consultant explained the differences between a healthy and unhealthy scalp - the former has clear follicles, with more than one strand of hair growing out of them.

Having found the root of my scalp issues, I was recommended their Dead Sea Masque Treatment and Infra-Red Therapy to help regulate sebum levels and promote hair growth.

I was then ushered to the treatment area, where I got to relax on a comfy armchair as the intensive cleansing Dead Sea Masque was applied all over my scalp to rid my hair follicles of any accumulated oil, dead skin, and other nasty residue.

The nourishing mud in the masque has a detoxifying effect, and other than regulating sebum production, it helps improve blood circulation and absorb impurities with its rich mineral content. The end result: Your hair pores and follicles are free of excessive sebum and dead skin, without any invasive treatments or pain.

Apart from those with oily and clogged pores like myself, it’s also suitable for those with itchy, flaky eczema and psoriasis whose scalps need some soothing. In fact, all of Topp Care’s hair care products are formulated using Western botanicals - that is, natural plant-derived ingredients - which makes them extremely safe and gentle on all hair and skin types.

The masque felt cool and relaxing on my scalp. It was left to set for 20 minutes before I was brought to a separate section of the salon for a hair wash.

Reclining into the cushiony seat, I felt extremely pampered as the friendly staff shampooed my hair for me, giving my scalp a good stimulating massage in the process. Conditioner was also applied to my hair ends, which tend to be dry despite the oiliness on top.

The staff explained that you should always use your fingertips - never your nails - to massage the scalp when shampooing, and avoid applying conditioner directly to the scalp so as not to block the follicles. Take note to keep your scalp in good condition!

After the hair wash, a protective hair serum was sprayed to moisturise my hair, both internally and externally, followed by a blow-dry. Then, a hair growth ampoule was applied on every inch of my scalp and massaged on. On top of that, I was also treated to a neck and shoulder massage - how delightful after a long day at work!

My hair was then blow-dried with styling. Other than the hair dryer, no other hot tools were used, so my tresses didn’t have to suffer any damage.

Then came the final step of the treatment: Infra-Red Therapy. This was administered for about 10 minutes to help aid in the absorption of nutrients into the hair follicles, as well as the regeneration of scalp cells and improved blood flow. It also helps reduce any inflammation experienced by those with sensitive scalps which flare up easily.

The Infra-Red machine emitted a comfortable warmth that nearly had me dozing off, and it was completely painless, so there’s nothing to worry about.

Immediately after the treatment, my hair felt so much lighter, instead of being weighed down in an oily mess. A second scalp scan confirmed this, showing that my hair follicles had indeed been cleared and cleansed thoroughly - and the previously clogged pores were finally open, allowing my hair strands to emerge better without strain.

The before (left) and after (right) photos are a clear indicator of how effective this treatment is - in just one session, no less! I can imagine that repeated monthly sessions will do even greater wonders for your hair and scalp condition. It’s no wonder that they’ve bagged a couple of awards - specifically for the Best Value Hair Treatment and for the Best Treatment for Grey Hair.

In terms of appearance, my locks also looked a lot shinier, bouncier, and more voluminous, and I could head straight for dinner with my friends with full confidence in my looks!
