Sumikko Gurashido: New San-X Character Cafe-Store In Kyoto With Soft Serve, Pastries & BBT
Japan trumps all when it comes to character-themed establishments; They’ve got everything from a Sanrio hotel with 66 different room designs, to a Beauty and the Beast cafe, and even a Sailor Moon apartment-hotel.
Fans of San-X and its cute, quirky characters can now look forward to visiting Sumikko Gurashido, a character-themed cafe-store in Kyoto, Japan that serves soft serve, pastries, bubble tea and other snacks. It’s permanent too, so there’s no need to feel the FOMO even if you’re not travelling this year.

Sumikko Gurashido has 2 outlets, both in Kyoto. The first one which opened in March 2020 is near Ginkakuji, while the newer one located in Kiyomizu will be open in October 2020.

Both outlets have wooden decor to match the surrounding traditional shophouses in the area, but of course with a modern touch of cute.

The original Ginkakuji outlet has a cherry blossom theme, while the new Kiyomizu one will be cleaner and more minimalist, with green as its main colour scheme.

Sumikko Gurashido has a good selection of reasonably-priced sweet treats such as character-themed Soft Cream (JPY500, ~S$6.48) and Sumikko Gurashi Yaki (from JPY300, ~S$3.89 for 6pcs), a soft, fluffy pastry of sorts with your choice of custard or chocolate filling.

You can also get Sumikko Gurashi Yaki sets (JPY1000, ~S$12.97) that come with reusable cups and coasters which you can keep as souvenirs.
