Aside from receiving actual bouquets from our significant others, we ladies love anything else to do with flowers, just because it comes with that extra soft, romantic touch - whether it’s Cath Kidston’s floral watches, floral nail art, or floral themed cafes.

Recently popularised by Australian influencer Tara Milk Tea (@taramilktea), flower cookies have been a big hit on Instagram, with many reposting her photos of the delicate-looking confections. She also shared her recipe, which you can find on her Instagram highlights reel.

Closer to home, we have influencer Jennifer (@blackivory), who made her own version of these aesthetically-pleasing bakes using the huge selection of tea leaves in her fridge.

Inspired by Californian baker Loria Stern who has been making and selling such cookies and other floral desserts for a long time, Jennifer generously shares her own recipe with us for publication (slightly adapted for length and clarity).

Ingredients

For the cookies:

  • 1 cup of unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 1/2 cup or 100g of granulated sugar
  • 1 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 2 cups or 256g of all-purpose flour

For decorating:

Step 1: Using an electric mixer on high speed, beat the butter, sugar, and salt together for about 3 minutes, until light and creamy. Add in the egg yolks and vanilla extract and beat for about 1 minute until well-combined.

Step 2: Sift in the flour and fold in using a spatula. Mix until well-combined with no lumps. Wrap the dough up in cling wrap, and chill for 15 minutes to let it firm up.

Step 3: Preheat oven to 180°C. While the oven is heating, dust some flour onto your working table and roll out the flour with a rolling pin. Using a cookie cutter, punch out the cookies and decorate using the various flowers and herbs.

Step 4: Line your baking tray and bake the cookies for about 8 minutes, before rotating the tray and baking for another 8 minutes.

Other tips from Jennifer @blackivory:

Jennifer shares that you can replace 50g of the flour with 50g of matcha powder for extra flavour and variation in colour, as seen above. She also used strawberry puree and red food colouring to make pink cookies. Get creative and experiment with different ingredients and types of flowers!

Of course, you can’t just go about plucking flowers from random fields, as not all of them will be edible. This is why Jennifer recommends going for dried flower buds and petals used for tea. She used dried chrysanthemum flowers, chamomile flowers, lavender buds, and rose buds for hers - these can all easily be bought from grocery stores in Singapore. You could even get sakura flowers from Isetan or Tomiz if they're in season!
