#1 Choose the right shade

Not all shades of dark lipsticks will suit everyone. The right shade should lift and brighten your complexion rather than make you look washed out.
If you have cool or pink skin undertones, a blue-based lipstick will suit you best. Those with warm olive or golden undertones will look great in dark shades with a yellow base.
When in doubt, stick to berry shades which is flattering on all skin tones. Avoid brown-based shades as they could make your complexion look muddy.
#2 Make sure your lips are smooth

Dark lipstick can be quite unforgiving when it comes to dry, chapped and flaking lips, emphasising every little dry patch and flake. Dark lipstick looks best on smooth lips so make sure to get your lips moisturised and prepped.
#3 Use a lip brush

While a nude lipstick can be applied casually and look good, dark lipstick that isn't applied with precision will look quite wonky and odd!
Use a lip brush to line your lips with the lipstick and a makeup remover to clean up the edges. Once you have your desired lip shade, fill in the rest of your lips using the lip bullet!
#4 "Pop" your lipstick

No one wants to get lipstick on their teeth, especially dark lipstick!
To avoid this makeup mishap, put a finger in your mouth, close your lips and pull it out. The lipstick residue on your finger is what would have had ended up on your teeth!
#5 Set with powder

Most lipsticks won't look good once it starts to wear off when you're eating, drinking or kissing, but faded dark lipstick will look especially obvious.
Set your lipstick with translucent power to ensure it lasts long! Get a piece of tissue paper and separate the two layers. Place one of the layers on your lips and use a powder brush to pat translucent powder onto your lips. This makes sure that your brush doesn't get lipstick on it!
#6 Conceal redness in your complexion

A dark lip will emphasise the red patches on your skin such as the area around your nose, so take note to conceal any redness in your complexion.
#7 Add colour and dimension

With a dark lip and the red patches on your skin concealed, your complexion may look too pale and one-dimensional.
Add dimension to your face with light contouring and bring colour to your cheeks with blusher.
#8 Dab it on

If a full dark lip is too big a step for you to take, try dabbing on light layers of a dark lipstick and creating an ombre look that's wearable but still has that vampy look.
