Veneers Seemed Too Big A Step, So I Tried This Smile Trial To Preview The Results First
I have a little habit of covering my mouth when I laugh, not from shyness, but because I’ve never been 100% confident in how my teeth look. You know those people who beam with wide, radiant smiles in photos? I’ve always wanted to be that girl.
For the longest time, I thought veneers might be the answer. They’re everywhere now, not just on celebrities or K-pop idols, but on everyday people too. And the idea of having a perfect, photo-ready smile is definitely appealing.
Then again, veneers also feel like a big step. The inner skeptic in me kept asking “what if I regret it?” I’m not the type to jump straight into a permanent smile makeover without knowing exactly what the results will look like. This idea of ‘perfect teeth’ stayed a fantasy… until I came across something called a Smile Trial. That’s what led me to Dental Designs Clinic in Singapore.
A Way To Preview Your Smile
Dental Designs Clinic focuses on combining dental expertise with digital technology to design smiles that feel natural and suited to each individual. Instead of going straight into treatment, their Smile Trial offers a way to preview what your teeth could look like. It’s completely non-invasive, with no drilling, no damage to teeth or permanent changes involved.
The process includes two visits that take just an hour each.
Visit 1: Pre-Scans
After booking my appointment, I headed down for my first visit. I started off relaxing in a stylish and cosy lounge overlooking Raffles Place before being brought in for my “before” photos.

Soon after, I was ushered into a dental treatment room that felt more modern than clinical - complete with a ceiling-mounted TV (where I caught up on Zhang Linghe’s latest show).
The session began with 3D scans and high-resolution photos of my teeth and gums, done by Dr Justin. The images were displayed on a screen as he explained and discussed them with me.

He pointed out that some of my gums were slightly swollen, the surfaces of my teeth were a little rough, and a few teeth had minor chips from teeth-grinding or eating hard foods like nuts. He also noted general wear and staining, and that my upper teeth tilted slightly inwards, which contributed to the uneven look of my smile.
It wasn’t anything alarming, but it helped me better understand why my smile looked the way it did.
A mould of my teeth was created with a 3D printer, which would then be used for the Smile Trial.
Visit 2: Smile Trial Preview
A week later, it was finally time for the moment I’d been waiting for.
Dr Justin first showed me the physical mould of my Smile Trial and went into a fascinating dive into how it was made. Using real tooth shapes from the clinic’s teeth library, a new set of perfected teeth was digitally designed to suit my facial features. This design was then layered on top of the mould of my original teeth.

Then came the big moment! A temporary gel material was placed into the mould and fitted over my teeth. Within seconds, it hardened into a smooth, enamel-like layer. When the mould was gently removed, I was left with a full set of “trial veneers” sitting right on my teeth.

Although the Smile Trial is inevitably slightly bulkier than actual veneers, it still gave a surprisingly realistic preview.
Before the smile trial was removed, I was brought into a consultation room to view my before-and-after comparisons on screen. The changes were subtle but the differences they made were remarkable!

My teeth were fine-tuned in height and width to perfect proportion. When I smiled, my uneven gum line was now a neat curve in line with my lips. And beyond just the mouth area, this new set of teeth balanced out my other features and made my face look more symmetrical.

There were video comparisons too, so I could see how my smile looked while talking and laughing, not just in still photos. With less gum showing and a more harmonious shape overall, my smile felt softer and more refined.
Naturally, I couldn’t resist taking some selfies and even video-called my family and besties to show them the transformation.

After soaking it all in for a few minutes, I popped back into the treatment room to get the Smile Trial removed.
