If you own a Polly Pocket licensed by Bluebird Toys from 1989, chances are, these are pretty valuable in the collectors’ market. Designed by Chris Wiggs in 1983 for his daughter Kate, these toys are basically tiny doll houses that fit perfectly into compact-sized makeup powder cases.

As a child, these weren’t just miniature toys, but entire make-believe worlds conjoured by my imagination, hidden away in a tiny place.

While I’m way past the toy buying stage, I can’t help having a soft spot for these Polly Pocket-inspired accessories created by homegrown crafter Fann. The founder of Clayspecies, she prides herself on a fluid art style expressed through the endless ways with which one can manipulate polymer clay.

I first discovered her works while scrolling through Instagram and was enchanted by her realistic renditions of Polly Pocket toys in the form of wearable accessories like glazed polymer clay earrings, necklaces, and keychains.

Her first Pocket World collection was inspired by classic Polly Pocket toys, with heart-shaped cases that open to reveal pastel-coloured bedrooms, a cosy Christmas fireplace scene, and even a tiny abode where two adorable frogs call home. Accompanied by a retro-esque illustrated print, the collection spanned earrings and keychains.

To celebrate summer, her Beach Vacation edition featured seashell-shaped cases that unveil holiday-themed scenes of people sunbathing, relaxing in the pool, as well as resort-style homes with lush palm trees.

Closer to home, her +65 series had Polly Pocket-style cases with uniquely Singapore sights, such as HDB residential blocks, the iconic dragon playground, as well as scenes from the well-loved Tiong Bahru Bakery.

Possibly her most intricate collection yet, her latest Studio Ghibli edition features the well-loved film Spirited Away. You’ll find scenes from the bathhouse, roadside stalls, and more, along with characters like Kaonashi and the pigs.

What makes this collection so special is that there are interactive elements within, such as a movable train on the tracks and a sliding wooden door. Considering how tiny these “Polly Pocket” polymer clay accessories are, you can imagine how much work goes into creating each detail!

While her earlier collections have all been sold out, follow Clayspecies here for first dibs on any upcoming launches.
