The Land of the Rising Sun is finally welcoming mass tourism after two years, but only for tour groups in the meantime. If you’re waiting with bated breath for independent travel but eyeing all the shopping you could be doing in Japan, subscription boxes could be a fun idea.

Meet Kawaii Box, one of the most popular subscription box companies based in Japan, known for its handpicked monthly collection of kawaii (cute) stuff. The surprise element is what makes these boxes so appealing, knowing that each one is packed with things like squishes, stationery, plushies, and even snacks straight from Tokyo.

Users can choose from three subscription plans, including a monthly one that renews until cancelled for US$29.90 (S$41.50), a six-month prepaid plan for US$27.90 (S$38.70) per month, or a one-year prepaid plan for US$24.90 (S$34.50) per month. Each month’s box is curated with adorable items before being shipped out for free internationally.

Among the items, you’ll find key chains, stickers, charms, bags and pouches, accessories, as well as all sorts of local candy and snacks. The most coveted items include plushies from Disney, San-X, Sanrio, Pusheen the Cat, Totoro, and more.

Some boxes are also themed to suit the country’s festivals and celebrations. For instance, the April 2022 box is themed around the sakura season, with items like sakura origami paper set, a retro lunch bag perfect for hanami (sakura flower viewing) picnics, as well as a Manmaru round animal plushie that’s basically a ball-shaped cat.

Meanwhile, the February 2022 box is meant to celebrate Valentine’s Day, with a cute bento box for your picnic dates, a Sumikko Gurashi hair tie set to help you doll up, as well as deco stickers for you to paste on your Vday cards. The site also gives a sneak peek of the upcoming month’s box so that you can decide if you’d like to subscribe.
