Viral Snack Review: Muddy Bites, The Chocolate-Filled, Bottom Tip Of An Ice Cream Cone

There’s no sunny day treat like a generous scoop of ice cream atop a waffle cone, but let’s face it, the best part comes at the very end—that final bite of the chocolate-filled cone. Growing up, I’ve been told that the chocolate prevents the cone from getting soggy while one enjoys the ice cream. Plus, the fact that the gooey chocolate pools at the bottom makes it all the more delicious.

But what if we could have endless repeats of these final bites? Trust Muddy Bites to fulfill my childhood dream. The foodie startup was started in 2018 by then-22-year-olds, Jarod and Tyler, who had an idea to make their favourite part of a sundae into a bite-sized snack. Their first attempt at crowdfunding failed, but after re-strategising and returning to Kickstarter, they managed to reach a new goal of $10,000 within 72 hours and the rest was history.

I first chanced upon these snacks while scrolling through Instagram and immediately did a Google search to see how I could get my hands on them. Turns out, platforms like Lazada, Shopee, Carousell, and Amazon sold Muddy Bites in both individual packs and bulk orders. I took a leap of faith and ordered three packs (S$12.90 each) at once—one of each flavour, namely milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate.

They arrived about two weeks later, in the most adorable packaging featuring illustrated ice cream cones and their mascot, a running cone tip with big anime eyes. I tried the milk chocolate one first and was delighted to find that they were crunchy and tasted just like the real deal. Pro tip: Keep your Muddy Bites in the fridge for that ice cold, ice cream feel.

The dark chocolate was good, but didn’t taste quite as nostalgic as the milk chocolate ones. The sweetest of the lot, the white chocolate bites had a fairly artificial taste to it, compared to the rest. With just 14 bites in each bag, I found myself getting through them pretty quickly. Other great ways to enjoy them include throwing a few atop a big scoop of ice cream or even blending them into a milkshake.

Would I buy these snacks again? Probably. On second thoughts, I’d rather have the entire ice cream cone for myself at a fraction of the price.
