As someone who's fascinated with The Hunchback of Notre Dame novel and film adaptations, I've always fantasised about frolicking about a bell tower in a gothic cathedral.

This dream can now be fulfilled, in a way, as Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall in Singapore has launched a new tour of their grand Clock Tower.

Keep reading to check out our review of the tour!

Besides plays and concerts, there's now a new activity at Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall - The Clock Tower Climb. During this 1-hour tour, you'll explore the building's architecture and new installations and the Clock Tower, as well as learn more about Singapore's history.

One of the stops is at the Victoria Theatre which was renovated in 2014 to enhance acoustics and add a unique decorative touch. Those wooden-looking panels on the walls are actually cast-iron components recycled from theatre chairs from the 1950s - something history buffs will admire.

Another highlight of the tour is the now air-conditioned foyer with a stunning Rubik's cube-like installation made up of theatre seats from the 1950s.

But undoubtedly, the pièce de résistance of the tour is the climb up the 54-metre high Clock Tower situated between the two performing venues.

The climb up to the very top will take 199 steps including steep climbs on two cat ladders. The first cat ladder was easy peasy but the second was just slightly unnerving for someone who is scared of heights; Overall, it was very manageable for someone who barely exercises!

And I get it, it's pretty tempting to turn up in a flowy dress and heels for photo purposes, but comfortable shoes and clothes are recommended. And no slippers allowed. Also, visitors are required to wear a helmet (that thankfully looks like a hat from far) at all times for safety reasons. So you can consider that when deciding on your outfit.

After the stair climb, you'll reach the large, intricate machine that operates the clockwork.

Past the first cat ladder, you'll be surrounded by gorgeous clock faces from inside the tower.

And finally, at the top of the tower are five majestic bells that sound the same Westminister jingle since 1905, chiming every 15 minutes, and playing the complete melody at every full hour.

The bells are glorious to behold up close and it was a wondrous experience to hear them chiming - a Hunchback of Notre Dame fantasy come true indeed.

Fun fact, the bells have total weight of 5000 kg and are inscribed with SS Benlendi, the name of the ship that delivered them to Singapore.

In the past, the clock required manual winding every four days, but became fully automated in the 2014 restoration.

Once the thrill of the bells chiming right by your ears settles down, you can enjoy the breeze and lovely views flanked by large columns.

Besides the Insta-worthy opportunities, this tour offers interesting historical facts about Victoria Theatre & Concert Hall that ties in with Singapore's history, leaving you appreciating the building for more than it's pretty neo-classical facade.

Here's a final tip: Check the weather forecast before booking your tickets. When it's raining, the topmost storey with the bells will be closed for safety reasons.

The Clock Tower Climb launches on 9 December 2021 and will only be available on selected days and timings.

Ticket price: $30/pax
Tour duration: 60 minutes
