It seems like plenty of celebrities are venturing into F&B lately, from Jeanette Aw opening her own bakery to Hong Kong actor Benz Hui’s daughter also starting her own cafe near Yishun. MediaCorp “Ah Jie” Fann Wong has also hopped onto the bandwagon with her own tart business, aptly named Fanntasy, and we were fortunate enough to try her Signature Valrhona Chocolate Tart.

About Fanntasy by Fann Wong

Fanntasy by Fann Wong currently solely operates online, and does not have a physical store at the moment. Currently, only whole tarts are up for sale, so if you’re only up for a single slice, you’ll have to team up with friends and share.

While Fann does not personally bake the tarts herself, and instead has a team helping her with the legwork, all the recipes were created by her after some R&D and experimentation.

Fanntasy’s tarts come in a white and powder blue box, with the brand’s name scrawled across the lid in pretty cursive text. Open it and you’ll find an illustration of a bunny on the inside cover, along with floral motifs and a description of the brand’s mission - which, in short, is to bring joy to everyone with their desserts.

That same bunny mascot is again present in the form of a colourised decorative card embedded into the cake. This, coupled with the edible gold flakes on the Signature Valrhona Chocolate Tart ($58) that was delivered to us, created a sense of fairytale whimsy that instantly brightened our day.

Each tart is 7 inches in diameter, which is enough for a group of 4 to 5 to get their fill and have seconds. The prices have been set based on the ingredients used, which are said to be of premium quality.

We found the Signature Valrhona Chocolate Tart pleasantly rich and dense, and it seems like this is something that might please the taste buds of all generations, for despite the richness of the Valrhona dark chocolate cremeux, it wasn’t overwhelmingly sweet. Between that and the crust is a thin layer of almond sponge. The almond flavour is virtually undetectable, though it did help add texture and balance to the overall ensemble.

Unfortunately, I’d have to minus some points for the crust, which I found to be too hard. This may be subjective, but I believe a good tart crust should be semi-soft such that it has a good bite, allowing one to cut it using a fork without too much difficulty. It also lacked dimension for me, and could have been a lot more buttery.

Leaving it in the fridge for a day or two allowed the crust to soften up a little, though the lack of butter still had it miss the mark that I was hoping it’d hit.

Overall, Fanntasy’s Signature Valrhona Chocolate Tart is a satisfactory dessert that I’d have no complaints eating, and it’s something that’s worthy of gifting to a loved one on a special occasion. But for all the hype that it has received, it was just good, not mindblowing. Should the crust recipe be improved in the future, we’re sure it has potential to be one of the better chocolate tarts in Singapore.

Apart from the chocolate tart, Fanntasy also launched a Musang King Gula Melaka Tart ($68) for the durian fans. This is made with pure Mao Shan Wang durian pulp, housemade gula melaka sauce, and topped with dessicated coconut.

These were the only two flavours so far, but we’re sure there’s more to look forward to in time to come.

How to order Fanntasy tarts

Fanntasy’s tarts are launched in batches, and the first one has since been concluded with everything selling out within 30 minutes. Keep up to date with news of the upcoming second launch via their Instagram page. Orders can be placed via their website once open.
