Cue the new hawker stall in Serangoon, Kumamoto Ramen, that offers quality ramen with a decent serving of toppings at affordable prices.

Hidden in a run-down hawker centre in Serangoon is Kumamoto Ramen, a stall that serves ramen with prices low enough that even the budget-conscious can indulge in it on the regular.

Their signature Kumamoto Ramen with tonkatsu broth is priced at just $6.80 and comes with three slices of chashu, a whole soft-boiled egg, bean sprouts and black fungus.

If you're a meat lover, it only makes sense to go for the Chashu Jumbo Ramen ($7.80) which costs only a dollar extra and comes with six chashu slices.

The broth is on the lighter side and has a lovely umami flavour and thick collagen texture. The noodles were springy and soft while the thin chashu slices had the right about of fat to have a tender and juicy bite. The soft-boiled eggs were perfectly done but could have done with a stronger marinate. On the whole, this was an impressive and satisfying bowl of ramen even without seeing the price tag.

If your go-to ramen choice is the spicy one, try the Karaka Tonkatsu Ramen ($6.80). The broth was flavourful and comforting but the pork taste was overwhelmed by the spice, and so it was relegated into more of a mala-esque soup.

For the sides, we went for the Gyoza ($4) and Takoyaki ($5), neither of which we'd recommend. The gyoza was dry inside and out, and tasted suspiciously like the frozen ones from the supermarket, while the takoyaki was too starchy, had barely any filling and was doused in a sauce that was overly salty.

Kumamoto Ramen also offers delivery and takeaway for their ramen which is packaged in cute tubs. You don't have to worry about it getting soggy as the noodles and ingredients are separated from the soup. Still, we recommend dining in as the ramen tasted best when served fresh and piping hot from the kitchen.

They also have other soup bases like shoyu and black garlic.
